Located in the state of Mizoram, Bairabi is an important town in Kolasib district. Bairabi is located at a distance of 130 km from the Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. It is also the railhead of the state of Mizoram.

Bairabi Dam

Bairabi Dam is located near Bairabi Village on the Tlawng river Village in Kolasib district in Mizoram. It is a proposed 80 MW dam. Brig ?henphunga Sailo initiated the Bairabi Hydel 120 MW Project during Mizoram People's Conference government. In the year 1982, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) had begun the investigation and survey of Detailed Project Implementation. On the basis of field .investigations NHPC prepared the feasibility of the project and the process was completed 1982-83.

The Congress Government headed by Pu Lalthanhawla came to power in the year 1984 and due to the change in the government Forest & Environment Clearance, Techno-Economic Clearance was followed but was unsuccessful and therefore, Bhramaputra Board was ordered inquire and prepare a DIPR, who decreased the power project from 120 MW to 80 MW.

In the year 2000, the Mizo National Front Government under Pu Zoramthanga came to power but even the Forest Environment Clearances and Techno-Economic Clearance were received no progress was made due to non availability of funds.

In the year in 2008, Congress Government headed by Pu Lalthanhawla came back to power. The Government of Mizoram and Sikaria Power Ltd, Kolkata signed a MOU on 10 August 2012, out of which the Government of Mizoram will get 13% free and the remaining amount will be sold to the government.
